Our friend Diane from Egypt. Some infromation blurred for privacy.

Through facebook, our group found a friend who lives in Egypt. She is a student at an international high school and is currently a sophomore. She said she would rather do an interview than communicate through a blog or another website, so we sent her questions through facebook inboxes and and email.

Thank you Diane for agreeing to interview with us. Here are some of the questions we came up with while studying Northern Africa and Southwestern Asia.

Q:How did you end up in Egypt? Where do you live in Egypt?
A: I was born here; I am ethnically Egyptian and my family is as well. I live in Cairo, Egypt which is the capital of Egypt. It is the most urbanized area and it is quite busy, just like any other countries.
Q: What is it like at the place you live?
A: Cairo is a beautiful place to live in. It is very busy and large. I think it is one of the largest Arabic cities in this region. City lights at night dominate the darkness, and there are really tall buildings as well. I think most of the people from other countries expect Egypt to be all about the sand and desert, but it's not like that in Cairo. However, there is a lot of pollution in the air and there's traffic most of the time.
Q: What kind of school do you go to in Egypt?
I go to an international school where we get educated in both English and Arabian, but we speak more English. I think the idea of this school is similar to how you described your school.
Q: Did you ever live in other countries? If so, which one?
A: I lived in America for about 3-4 years during my late elementary and early middle school years. I also lived in Dubai for several months. This is when I was able to enhance my English skills.
Q: If you have lived in other countries, what has caused you to move to a different country, and what was the reason to return back to Egypt?
A: My parents wanted me to learn English because they want me to be able to have better options for future jobs, and my father works in the trading industry, so our family was able to move to America for a while and Dubai because we thought my father's job will take place there for a while. We returned back to Egypt because our family is much more comfortable living in Egypt because it is where we used to live, the my father's business led us back to Egypt.
Q: What languages do you speak? What is the dominant language in Egypt, or the region you live in (Northern Africa)?
A: I speak Arabic and English because Arabic is the dominant language in Egypt, and most of the neighboring countries speak Arabic. I learned English from overseas during my study.
Q: We understand that you are a Christian, is that a dominant religion in Egypt?
A: Actually, in Egypt, Christianity is not a dominant religion. Egypt is an Arabic country, and thus the majority of the people are Muslims. However, the large minority is Christianity, like our family. Large Christian societies can be found in larger cities such as Cairo or Alexandria.
Q:Does religion have any affects on the people? Such as life styles, or the ways of thinking?
A: Religions is such an important part of life for Egyptians. Cairo is known for beautiful and numerous mosque minarets. Minarets are sort of...temples that Muslim people go to pray and do religious rituals. 'Adhan' is the name of the prayers they do. They pray five times a day. I understand that they think this helps them through everyday of their lives and maintain pace.
Q: What are some of the advantages living in Egypt? What would be some things you would like people from other countries to know about Egypt?
I'm proud to say that Egypt is known for its old history and artwork. I'm sure that everyone has heard of the pyramids, paintings in the tomb, Imhotep, Sphinx, and more. And also, Egypt has several festivals that are greatly enjoyable. Most of the carnivals and festivals are religious, but Egyptians of all religions join in on the festivity. 'Mulin' is celebrated with noise (a lot of music) and fawanees lanterns that are lit everywhere. 'Sham' is a festival celebrated during spring, and it has existed for a long time.
Q: Is there a famous celebrity in Egypt?
A: Yeah, there are many, but Ruby is known pretty well. She is a singer and actress and she's very gorgeous and looks exotic. Some people say that I sort of look like her...
